FAQs
Quick answers to frequently asked questions about water heaters.
What are the most common signs that my water heater needs attention?
Key warning signs include running out of hot water faster than usual, water that takes a long time to heat up, discolored or rusty-looking hot water, unusual noises like popping or rumbling coming from the tank, visible leaks around the unit, or a significant unexplained increase in your energy bills.
Why is my hot water running out so quickly?
This can be caused by several things, such as a failing heating element, sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank reducing the unit’s effective capacity, a thermostat set too low, or simply a tank that’s undersized for your household’s demand.
What causes a water heater to make popping or rumbling noises?
Those sounds are typically caused by sediment accumulating at the bottom of the tank and being disturbed as the water heats up.
Why does my hot water look rusty or discolored?
Rusty or discolored hot water is often a sign that the inside of your water heater tank has begun to corrode, or that the sacrificial anode rod needs to be replaced. If the tank itself is corroding, replacement is typically the only solution.
What is a sacrificial anode rod and why does it matter?
The anode rod is a metal rod inside your water heater tank that attracts corrosive elements in the water, protecting the tank from rusting from the inside out.
How long do traditional tank water heaters typically last?
Most tank-style water heaters have a lifespan of 8 to 12 years with proper maintenance.
What is a tankless water heater and how is it different from a traditional one?
A tankless water heater heats water only when you need it rather than storing and continuously heating a large tank. This makes them significantly more energy efficient than traditional tank-style units and ensures you essentially never run out of hot water.
What should I do if my water heater is leaking?
Don’t ignore a leak. A leak from the pressure relief valve or fittings can often be repaired, but a leak from the tank itself almost always means the unit needs to be replaced. Either way, water damage from a failing water heater can be extensive and costly. Contact Baumann & DeGroot as soon as possible to have the situation assessed.
Is a water heater dangerous?
A properly installed and maintained water heater is very safe. However, there are a few things to be aware of. Gas water heaters can produce carbon monoxide if they malfunction or are improperly vented. This is why adequate ventilation and a functioning CO detector in your home are important.
How energy efficient is a traditional tank water heater?
Traditional tank water heaters are less efficient than tankless units primarily because of standby heat loss, the energy used to keep a full tank of water hot at all times, even when no one is using it. That said, newer tank water heaters are significantly more efficient than older ones.
