I’ve thought long and hard about posting this, and with this cold spell bringing back memories, I feel it’s time to share my experience. In the fall of 2024, I hired Baumann & DeGroot for a furnace tune-up. When I scheduled the appointment, I clearly explained that toward the end of the previous winter my rollout switch had been tripping, and I strongly suspected a failing heat exchanger. I had seen flame disturbance when the blower kicked on and knew something wasn’t right. I also knew my heat exchanger had a lifetime warranty, which is why I wanted it checked before winter. I was told the regular tune-up schedule was full, but I could be seen sooner on an emergency schedule for a higher cost. I agreed because I wanted peace of mind before winter. They came out the same day and told me the issue was just the gas valve needing cleaning and adjustment. They completed the “fall tune-up” at the higher rate, which I had no issue paying. I trusted their judgment as professionals. During that initial visit, the technician recorded video of the flame. Looking back, I believe flame disturbance was visible in that video. After the later failure, the owner even commented that this should not have been missed. I understand mistakes happen — I work in the automotive field and have made them myself. When I do, I own them and make it right. About two months later, during a cold spell, my furnace had a major failure. The heat exchanger failed, causing flame rollout that led to melted wiring, blower damage, and multiple sensor failures. The rollout sensor didn’t catch it in time, and there was significant damage. I called again for emergency service. They came out and confirmed the heat exchanger failure. This happened late on a Friday. I called one of the owners and calmly explained my frustration — especially since I had raised this concern months earlier and there was documentation of flame disturbance. To his credit, he worked hard that night to find a replacement and sent multiple techs out to get me back up and running. I was very grateful and even gave the techs gift sets as a thank-you. At that point, I felt I had given them every opportunity to make things right — and initially, I thought they had. I was told I would be contacted on Monday to follow up. That never happened. I’ll admit I should have followed up myself and checked my email more closely — that part is on me. However, not receiving a call made me believe the owner was handling things and was going to make it right. About a month later, I received a call saying I had an unpaid invoice of around $1,000. This was the first time I was made aware of the balance. There was no prior conversation about what I would be charged, no explanation, and no discussion of accountability given the circumstances. Had the heat exchanger been addressed originally, this likely would have been a few hundred dollars in labor under warranty instead of a much larger repair. I sat on the bill for a few days, trying to approach it with a clear head. In the end, I paid it without arguing. In April 2025, I reached out to share my concerns about how the situation was handled and never received a response. To be fair: • The emergency response was solid. • The technicians were professional and hardworking. • They did get my heat restored quickly. But I’m disappointed that my original concern wasn’t taken seriously, that documented warning signs were missed, that communication dropped off, and that I was left with a large bill without any real discussion. Mistakes happen. I understand that. What matters is how they’re handled afterward. In my line of work, when I make a mistake, I own it and absorb it. I was hoping for the same level of accountability here. I take responsibility for not following up more aggressively, but I also expected better communication and transparency given the situation. I’m sharing this so others can make informed decisions and to encourage better follow-through and customer communication in the future.Load more
